Rugs can make or break your space so it’s important you get it right! Choosing a rug for a room may seem pretty straightforward… However, once you start your search it’s pretty easy to become overwhelmed by the endless choices.

From shape, size, material, colour, placement, texture to pattern and so much more, there’s a lot that goes into choosing a rug for your space. Below we explore some tips and tricks to think about when shopping for a rug from Brighton’s Interior Stylist, Kylie.

Use Your Rug To Define Spaces

In Queensland we love indoor, outdoor living where a gentle breeze can flow through the entire home, why wouldn’t we when the climate is this good?! That means plenty of open-plan living. A rug is a great opportunity to help define spaces when there aren’t walls to do so. For example, using a rug to define the living room from the dining. So, measure up the space to ensure your rug fits comfortably.

Don't Overlook Size

A small rug will play with perspectives and make your room look smaller. So, ensure it fills the space and you can fit your furniture onto it or at the very least the front legs of your furniture. Remember your rug will help define your spaces in particular with open plan living, so the size of your rug will indicate the size of that space.

Use Your Rug to Anchor Furniture

Another point to think about when looking at the size of your rug - does your furniture fit on your rug? Ideally, your furniture fits on your rug. If this is not possible then at the very least, ensure the front legs of that furniture piece sit on the rug.

The Rug Doesn't Have to be The Hero

Sometimes less is more! Your rug can very well be the main feature of your room however, it doesn’t have to be. Think about other furniture and décor in the space and whether all the elements will compete with each other or not.

It's All About Colour

When it comes to choosing colours and tones of your rug, ensure you're matching it with the furniture in your room. If you are shopping for a rug for your living room, it’s a great opportunity to take a cover of one of the cushions to help colour match. Our top tip when it comes to colour is if your sofa is a warm tone, keep your rug in the warm tone family and likewise with a cool tone sofa, keep your rug in a cooler tone.
